My wife & I went to Akumal (on Mayan Riviera 20 min. south of Playa del Carmen) in August 2001. We had been to Akumal previously in March 1995. There is an Italian all-inclusive on the south end of Akumal bay and quite a few of them (maybe 25%?) were topless. In March 1995 this meant quite a few topless women on the beach, but when we went in late August we found that most Italians had left for the season. There were still a few women going topless, mostly confined to the south end of Akumal bay. I did not see any on Half Moon bay (although we were only there a short time.)

Toplessness is perfectly acceptable in Akumal, but I only occassionally saw older women going topless there. Most of the topless women in Akumal were young and in good shape. My wife (who is well into her 40s) didn't feel comfortable going topless there - not because of harassment or staring, but because there were only a few topless women and all much younger than she. She feels more comfortable being topless in Playa or Tuluum where its more prevalent, even with the over-the-hill gang like us.
