I am 42 and an avid beach lover and my husband and I really don't like tan lines! We have just returned from a wonderful week's holiday in Broome, Western Australia where the outback really does meet the ocean - The beaches are outstanding! At all beaches in Australia topless sunbathing and swimming is the norm and I started sunbathing topless at about age 20 - I don't own a bikini top preferring to wear a thong or G-string.

Literally every beach in Victoria is top free. Of course there are some beaches where the local custom is not top free, but in general you will not be hassled anywhere. Melbourne's most popular beach is probably at Kerford Road, and most women who go topless there will put on their tops to go to the snack shops, but will quite happily swim topless. I have seen a few daring souls walking on the pier topless (they were teenagers and with some boys who I suspect had dared them to do it). Going down the east side of the Port Phillip Bay, St. Kilda beach is similar to Kerford Road, Elwood is perhaps a bit more conservative. At Brighton again topless is commonplace and right around the bay at least as far as Sandringham. Farther down there is a nude beach at Sunnyside. On and on. There are very few exceptions to the top free tolerance anywhere in Victoria. Enjoy.

A few years ago we visited Australia. We got on a tour bus that was going to the beach. Someone asked the driver which beaches were the best and she replied that at all the beaches in the country being topless was acceptable. At this time a few people exited the bus. Going somewhere that some women were going to be topless bothered some to the point that they didn't want to be there. After getting to the beach and seeing that this was their culture and they were at ease with it, it was no big deal. There were a few women from our group that thought that a trip to Australia wouldn't be complete without going topless on the beach and had a great time.

I live on the Gold Coast and topfree seems to be the norm in most parts on the beach.  It has a very European attitude towards topfree over here.

It is fully accteptable in Australia for any woman to be topless on any beach. I spent some time in the States and was shocked at the uptight attitude Americans had to topless bathing and brief swimmers.  It also amazed me that me wearing just Speedo briefs on the beach was something to talk about!!

Its been about 25 years since anyone was arrested for being topless on an Australian Beach!  I think its about time you Yankee babes exercised your right to be free and go topless wherever you want! That's how it was done in Australia, they couldn't keep arresting a beach full of topless women could they?
