Every beach is topless and I
would estimate the proportion of
ladies going topless was consistently around 50% across a wide age
range. The beaches were more crowded at
weekends
with the locals enjoying some leisure time, but the Spanish seem just
as keen
on going topless as their visitors from other countries.
Going topless was really no big deal. Many
ladies were happy to swim or walk along
the beach topless – it’s just part of the “normal” beach scene. So much so that I didn’t take a bikini top to
the beach at all during my trip!

We have just returned from a week at Lanzarote in the Canary Islands in the winter sun. Ferna was happy to be topfree around the pool and on the beach. Probably about 40% of the women were topfree, including walking around the beach and in the sea. It just seemed the normal thing to do. We visited several beaches - at Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca, and Corallejo on the nearby island of Fuertaventura.

Over the last 5 years I have made about 10 trips to Gran Canaria (Canary Islands) including a stay of 6 months in 1998. I spent most of my time in Playa Del Ingles the main resort on the island, however, I have also visited Puerto Rico, the other major resort and Las Palmas the capital of the island. Topfreedom is practiced on all beaches and hotel pools. It is practiced by about 40% of women of all ages.
Most of the women who go topfree also swim in the sea and in the hotel pools topfree. Playa Del Ingles is the largest of a combination of 3 resorts named San Augustin, Playa del Ingles and Maspalomas. It takes about an hour to walk from San Augustin to the lighthouse of Maspalomas which is at the southern tip of the island. I have often seen topfree women walk from one end to the other.
There are beach bars at intervals along the entire beach and it common for people to visit them topfree.
Thongs and G-strings are worn by men (including myself) and women. Some non-topfree women wear thong bikinis.
Everyone looks but I think there is looking and there is "looking." Because I never stopped in the topfree areas I did not stay long enough to see if young topfree women had the same problems as young female nudists (on the clothing optional beaches). I think not because many more women went topfree than nude and there is safety in numbers.
