I spent a few happy days in Augustin, Guernsey (Channel Island). One guidebook I consulted suggested topless bathing was acceptable there, if practiced discreetly. I made some enquiries from the tourist board before I went and they more or less confirmed this, saying, “It isn’t done much in Guernsey”!

I visited a number of the main beaches on the island – it was true, not many women were topless, despite exceptionally high temperatures. Nevertheless I went topless everywhere I went and apart from the odd comment or long stare, got little reaction from other beachgoers. There were a few other topless ladies in some places – one other on Port Soif beach, 5 others on Cabo (a crowded Sunday – many locals) and one other on Vazon. I was very discreet – I always put my top on to swim – but I never felt uncomfortable being one of so few topless, perhaps because I’ve been going topless for years so I’m prepared to put up with a few funny looks to get a nice even tan!
