I just returned from a week stay in Tulum Mexico (3/15 to 3/22). My husband and I stayed in a cabana style resort just south of the Tulum ruins. We had heard topfreedom was practiced frequently in this area, particularly when Europeans visit. On our first day at the beach I was the only person topless, this did not bother me as I have been going this way for about 20 years, there was a large group from the New York area here for a wedding, but none of the women participated in toplessness. They were actually quite surprised when they discovered I was American, at first I think they thought my husband and I were European. There were at times women would walk past our beach topless and as the week went on one other women from our resort went topless on our beach, she was actually from Brazil. I just continued to sun topless, go into the water and take very long walks without my top. During our walks I would meet people from our resort who would smile and say hello, but no one ever made me feel uncomfortable. It appeared that about 25 % of the women we would encounter on our walks each day were topless. It was a wonderful vacation and a great place if someone wanted to start practicing topfreedom, it was a shame that all those women never participated as the week went on, they would have loved it! Just a note if you are going to the Caribbean area of Mexico and plan on going topless I suggest to go indoor tanning for two weeks first as my husband and I did, the sun is strong, and if you are leaving the cold north and haven't any base color you will most definitely burn.

I stumbled upon your site while planning my vacation. I have been going topfree for a few years now, and will not vacation where I have to wear a top. This July I went to Mexico. I stayed on the Riviera Maya near Tulum. I was topfree for all seven days at the beach. I did not go to the swimming pool, but others were topfree there as well. Going topfree was well tolerated, even though only about 10% of the women went without their tops on any day. There was no gawking, and most of the women without tops did not cover to go into the ocean. It was very relaxing.

In November 1999 my wife and I happened to go to Tulum Beach. This beach is located about half a mile south of the Tulum Ruins. There are a few local restaurants which sell beer, nachos, etc...Small thatched huts are for rent on the beach. They are very spartan. On the Beach, about 20 (50%) of the women were topless. At the north end of the beach there were even about 5 nude people enjoying the water near the rocky shore. Military and police patrols came by every now and then, but did not hassle anyone. There did not seem to be any problem with gawkers. The crowd was very "Mellow" shall we say. This was a pleasant place to enjoy a Mexican beach experience which was AWAY from the sophisticated areas (but which still had beer handy).
