Stay away from Virginia Beach. I have lived here for many years and it is prudish in the extreme. One time when I first moved here, I ventured down to the beach in a thong. I was threatened with citation unless I covered my butt. Taking my top off was obviously out of the question and things haven't changed here over the years. Many places I've been to I've been able to "break the ice" by being the first woman to take off her top. Other women often do the same when they see someone take the lead. Virginia Beach is NOT one of those places. Beware!

As a feminist, I think Virginia Beach's law prohibiting topfree sunbathing is wrong. As a radical individualist, I don't feel a duty to obey a law that discriminates against any group. So I took off my top. However, I was discreet. I wore my top in the water. Police officers are focused more on what happens on the boardwalk and along Atlantic Avenue. The only people who noticed were a little boy who thought that it was funny that I wasn't wearing my top and a man who did stare but did not bother me too much.
